You get the Big 12 North? Because I don't...
To begin on a solemn note: this column is dedicated to any Big 12 players whose postseason awards hopes also perished in the Todd-Reesing-for-Heisman Colorado train crash on Saturday…
- What in the world happened to the Kansas Jayhawks in Boulder? Well, I ask that question as I remember nearly every (if not all) handicapper on the 810 WHB airwaves last week chose Colorado as the sexy upset (guess who didn’t, and here’s a hint: it rhymes with “urtis itchen”).
- Those crazy gambling guys…what do they know?
- Then again, odds makers pegged Texas A&M as a 5.5-point favorite in Manhattan.
- Oops.
- Wildcats running back Daniel Thomas had four rushing touchdowns in the first half as the Wildcats led 38-0 at halftime of a 62-14 contest, scoring the most first-half points in a Big 12 game since hanging 38 on the Jayhawks in 2000.
- M-I-Z…Z-Oh, never mind.
- Tigers fans now know exactly what K-State fans went through – watching a team that close to making big noise on the national stage in multiple years, only to slam back to earth.
- Could Gary Pinkel and crew make it back to that level? Sure they could, but there are no guarantees, and it illustrates just how special those years are when they happen.
- Right now, you could substitute Oklahoma for Missouri in that line of thought. The Sooners are 3-3 and have a big, fat oh-fer in neutral site and away games.
- Even if all three losses are by a combined five points, there’s nothing “Big Game” about that.
- I think Nebraska’s defense is still good enough to get it done in the Big 12 North. Texas Tech is from a different planet.
- I mean, if you've never seen it, look at Tech offensive lineman Brandon Carter’s head.
- An aside statistic that really has no relevance to this column but is still worth noting moving forward: 93 penalties were called in six Big 12 games this weekend. More than 100 were flagged, but only 93 accepted.
- C’mon officials. If it isn’t a rash of delay, false start or off-sides calls, that’s too much.
- Did anyone really care if CBS fixed its technical difficulties during the Chiefs/Redskins game? Or were you hoping, like I was, that they would give up and turn to any other game?
- Wait, how un-media cheerleader of me. What I meant to say was:
- CHIEFS WIN! CHIEFS WIN! Get out there and support your team!
- A hearty congratulations to 810 Sportscenter co-host Kenny Holland (and KAOS co-host, 1510 AM, 4 p.m. – voted “best show in KC” in 2009 by Pitch Magazine), who called Kansas City’s win against Washington after week two.
- Kenny is also a New York Giants guy. Well, he was until the team’s debacle yesterday against New Orleans.
- The Kansas City Wizards fell 3-2 to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night and wrap up their season this Saturday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark against D.C. United.
- The loss dropped Kansas City’s record to 8-12-8 on the year and cemented 2009’s “under .500” goal that all major professional franchises in the city apparently set as a goal.
- Yes, that means I don’t believe the Chiefs are ready to go 7-3 over the remainder of this season – unless four Ryan Succop field goals and a safety are going to get it done on a regular basis.
